International Day for the Elimination of
Violence against Women Commemoration of the International Day Against Violence Towards Women at a soccer game in Buenos Aires On December 17, 1999, by resolution 54/134, the UN General Assembly designated November 25th as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. That day, governments, international organizations and NGOs organize activities to raise public awareness about the issue. Women activists have marked November 25th as a day against violence since 1981. The date was chosen to commemorate the brutal 1961 assassination of the Mirabal sisters, political activists in the Dominican Republic, on orders of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo.
